It is not always easy to be the one in charge
In charge of fixing the daily conundrums
That inevitably a come up at 4:30 on Friday
The Friday you have ball game tickets with a pal
Having to make the calls can cause nerves to flair
Flair with fear and raw vulnerability for what’s unknown
And the issues get more gnarly as the day wears on
Wearing patience thin and testing tired brain cells
Why would anyone want to be the boss?
The boss gets all the complaints and aggravation
Constant interruptions render plans obsolete
Obsolete and out of touch before clearing the gate
Being boss comes with these and many more challenges
Challenges roller coaster emotions and energy
These diversions don’t overshadow the reason to lead
Leading is about people, connection, and excellence
Leaders can see and develop our potential
The potential to fully express and utilize our talents
The boss cares about whether people are engaged
Engaged and unencumbered by rolling crud
Hats off to all leaders who get through the muck
The mucky muck of business to help people be great
Jobs would be unbearable without great bosses
Bosses who get what leading is really about

My Blog Experience

The Blog assignments, what can i say they were a good opportunity for students like me fishing for extra points. I found the blogs not tedious and were always straightforward. The only bad thing i can say about the blog assinments was that it was hard to remember to do them and to comment on. I always forgot to do them and had to write one up last minute. I had fun reading the interesting blogs and made some blog friends all in all the experience was a good one. Hate to see it end but all good things must come to an end.

The ABCs of DISC

Before spring break we asked to take a personal profile exam to determine what type of personality we possess. It was slew of questions that I felt had nothing to do with ones personality, well some of them at least. At the end of it all, it determined that my personality was Dc which in the hand out means dominant conscientiousness. I agree that I am the conscientious type because I'm more of a diplomat and I take the time to weigh the consequences of my actions in a given situation. The only time I display the attributes of dominance is the when situations are bleak and other members of the team don't have a solution. I don't wish to be another personality type mainly because it's the best suited for managers and I hope that the exam is correct on its assumptions. Knowing people's personality type would help for situations in which you can assign tasks to different members of a team. Would I administer this test to my own organizations, yes. Because knowing ones personality would help in how I can approach my members.

A quote I've seen long ago as a child visting Disney World a long time ago and have kept with me till this day. I've got a lot of dreams some more materialistic than others as similar to many other people in the world. Like to win the Mega Million or to have a million dollar investment idea but as obscene as these dreams or fantasies are, there are some that i do want to make come true. These dreams as you view them are longer dreams, but are life goals I've set for myself. Each goal has a certain time limit or age that i've set that should be accomplished. The first is to become a Marketing Coordinator after my current internship expires. The second is interconnected to the first and that is to be a Marketing Director in that same company by the age of 26. The Third is to have a Masters degree in Marketing, by the age of 28. The fourth, is to make my mother's dream of owning a chain of restaurants to go with the one we currently own now. The fifth, is to start a foundation that will provide aid to the Carribbean countries like my own by the age 45. These ambitions i feel seem to be feasible and i will continue to work on them with a full head of steam.

How I Handle Decision Making Conflict

Today, I'm blogging about an exercise Professor Kurpis put me and the class through last week. The exercise entailed decision making. We were given the entire class period to decide on what course of action Professor Kurpis should take in improving our grades from our previous exam. The entire class went into turmoil shouting here and there, we couldnt get a concensus on the subject matter. At first, I was participating in the choosing but as time dragged on I became more on the side of compromise. At that point, i came to conclusion that my fellow classmates would not entirely agree on my idea of dropping the lowest grade so i decided to go with a type of compromise that seemed to benefit me a little better than dropping the grade. As the hour dragged on, I moved from compromise into avoidance because I felt that the decsion making process was going nowhere and at the end of it all we would get nothing. I took this route specifically because of my personality set. I have tendency to give in when my demands are not met or recieved well by others, sort of like a "pushover". All in all, the excercise was enlightening and stressfull and I'm not looking forward to anything like that ever again.

A Eggs-cellent way to plan :)

Last week we were charged with the assignment of dropping a egg from 12ft without cracking it using 9 straws and 2ft of tape and teams were allotted 25 minutes to plan. This was a high pressure situation for us but we handled it as best we could by first defining our goals as quickly as we could which was to get Humpty Dumpty from point A to point B without a crack. We evaluated our resources by making approximations and artist extrapolations which were not the best, clearly no one in the group were here for art design. We make approximations of the length and thichkness of the straws as well as the weight of the egg and how much tape allotted. Many designs were made such as a basket with a line of straws attached by tape. But we decided to use our final design which was a pyramid which encased our egg. We went through all the steps which would mean success but that's not what happened, humpty fell and never got back up. All in all, we showed that we could pool all our talents together and formulate a plan and execute it as best to our abilities.

Cultural clash

This entry is about cultural differences and a situation in which I've experienced a awkward moment. The situation took place my first day at work. I was introduced to my department and was getting to know everyone there. A question came up about my nationality and I answered I am Haitian. A response came right after from a coworker asking me if I knew how to use black magic and called it voodoo, the practice that stems out from New Orleans. I was highly offended in that he would automatically assumed that i practiced black magic and also assume that vodou (the correct spelling) was some sort devil worship that you see in horror movies. I quickly clarified what the practice was exactly and told the individual I was devote catholic but gave a little tid bit that 98 percent of Haitians who practice are devote Catholics and winked. I think that may have intimidated the individual a little.

Hello, my name is Leonard Milfort. I am a senior at Baruch college where I major in Corporate Communication and minor in Sociology. Currently, I am employed at New York University Medical Center as a Project Assistant in research among other things as well. Previously to this, I was an Assistant Manager at a small restaurant in Brooklyn called Kreyole Flavor which lasted for about two years.
